Between Loving and Longing (poem)
Two children danced along a brook
Holding their summer for eternal
Blushing faces, turned back to look
Shivered home through silent snowfall
Two sigh on windows of two homes
With a lake of unsure ice between
Where they dance an endless summer song
In the warmth of feverish winter dreams
When summer will come they cannot see
Still only to their dreams they keep
As winter covers fields to freeze
The dances there, they danced so free
Two children know not where to look
But to the sun that sees them grow
They wait for the melting mountain’s brook
To find where it will start to flow
*
When finally the children meet
Spring shines upon two different faces
The brook flows fresh between their feet
That still know what the real dance is
And now two children dance anew
As if no winter ever passed then
They’re simply rolling in the dew
Not asking why, or when again
And with gratitude they say goodbye,
With smiles they dream at night.
With love they swim across the lake
To bring it to the other side...
A goal they reach so suddenly
Embracing halfway 'cross the lake
Feeling as they never did so free
They met the middle that they make.
